Remembering Lockerbie

30 years ago today, 21st December, Pan-Am flight 103 carrying 259 passengers and crew, exploded over the Dumfries-shire town of Lockerbie, Scotland.

The original flight plan was from Frankfurt to Detroit, travelling through London and New York .

The disaster is known throughout the world as ‘The Lockerbie Bombing’.

The aircraft was destroyed by a bomb over Lockerbie, during the transatlantic leg of the route, with large sections crashing onto a residential housing area, killing a further 11 people.

A joint investigation between Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and FBI, resulted in arrest warrants being issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991.

In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. He was later released by the Scottish government in 2009, on compassionate grounds, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012, the only person ever to be convicted for the attack.

Here, we remember all those 270 souls, that lost their lives.
